Naturopathic Medicine is a system of healthcare based on looking at the totality of an individual, identifying imbalances to the harmonious state of the human body and its physiology, and then implementing natural means to start the healing process. The philosophy of naturopathic medicine is different than that of conventional medicine in that patients are seen as individuals in relation to their environment both external and internal. Naturopathic doctors utilize traditional and natural medicines to customize treatment plans that facilitate healing and overall better health and quality lifestyle. The goal of naturopathic medicine is to integrate multiple disciplines and improve the overall health by treating the whole person.
Naturopathic medical students are required to undergo a four-year post-graduate comprehensive medical education program with training in basic medical sciences, clinical and physical diagnosis, laboratory and diagnostic imaging studies, naturopathic philosophy and pharmacology. They also train in a wide variety of natural therapies such as clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, acupuncture and homeopathy. Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary care doctors whose diverse techniques include modern and evidence-based traditional medicine. Naturopathic doctors are required to pass national board exams in basic and clinical medical sciences as well as all the naturopathic therapies.
